Mod 12 - Podcasting

Ok, my final mod for my class asks for “Find a podcast that you could use in your teaching and post a comment to your blog on how you could use it. I feel we should start off with some helpful descriptions for anyone who might need it and happens to stumble upon this blog.

What are Podcasts?

 A podcast (or non-streamed webcast) is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication. The word usurped webcast in common vernacular, due to rising popularity of the iPod and the innovation of web feeds.     ~~

Podcast that you could use in your teaching:


I would use the podcasts found on LibriVox~~ website to create a current read along program.  For the read along program the students will be assigned to read three chapters each weekend and to make a list of any words not fully understood.  In the upcoming week the students review the words that they do not understand and then they will then in class read along while the book is read from the podcast.  This will continue until the semester ends or the book does.  With building a reading program in this fashion the students will be able to hear another person read the work which will expose them to more native speakers.
The current reading on their site ~~ is Bram stoker's Dracula.  The book is released in single chapter increments with three chapters being released each week. ~~  With this structure the students will be able to read ahead of hearing the readings and then will be able to read along in class to help solidify both the written and the spoken.

One advantage of this podcast is that the books will keep on changing keeping your material fresh and the readings will be archived so you or your students can return to any particular reading you like later.

How do we override the control that limits our control?  Well, we need to first look and then pull on information that is interesting from new sources from anywhere in the world and share it.

 It was once stated that you are ‘Six degrees of separation’ away from knowing anyone in the world.  However, this just shows us that we as individuals just don’t take the time to ask the people we know who they know.  In this same token, we don’t ask ourselves and our friends what is going on in around the world. 

So how do we create a shrinking world and what does this all mean?
It means if we want to be one that is informed and hold ‘global citizenship’ we need to take control and find our way to become informed through asking, exploring, and then sharing.

A word of caution:
I too was exposed to perils of penpals in high school.  The majority of the time exposed and used was very limited and the writing was predominately in my native language.  However, I should say that not all of the writing to my penpals where limited because my wife was a my penfriend from Turkey.  

How will I use this tool in my classroom:

I would use the ‘Classroom Connect’ feature in my classroom to connect my students (in Turkey) with native speakers in other countries.  I would personally try to connect my students’ with native speakers in England and America.  I personally would use England as the dominate source for native exposure seeing there is a higher exposure to English people then there is Americans. 

In using this resource for such and activity I will allow for my students to become culturally exposed to other forms of English along with being able to practice using English in a natural setting.

With proper monitoring eventually the time the ‘Classroom Connect’ can become a classroom voice chat.  Voice chatting will give my students a great exposure to English and will give them plenty of talk time in the target language.

(Post #2) Flickr in the classroom

Flickr in classroom events:

Flickr brings the class together to allow for an interactive resource that allows students to illustrate what they cannot describe clearly.  It also becomes an interactive device for an instructor to create scaffolding devices to use.

One possible lesson: 
Students to show pictures of places they have been throughout the summer.   Then using a tool such as pimpampum students can create a story book of the events that took place over their summer.  Possible modifications for this lesson is a lesson on where students want to go or if the lesson is content based have the students create a flip book of what they have learned.


Here is an example of the outcome using a prepared slide show “Scotland by TeachingEnglish”~.  If this was a content lesson on Scotland I would go through and describe each picture to the class.
allowing for me to scaffold what is being taught.  This slide is one example of an imae I would use in my own object to allow me describe to area of Scotland.

Mod 7

2 relevant articles

After reading two articles (1, 2) I have come up with some valuable potential for microblogging in the classroom and in education in general.  One main value I see with microblogging is the ability to network together with other instructors gain new and helpful ways of instructing.  Another valuable way of using this tool of microblogging is to create a environment where students are able to be individuals and have the ability to share their personalities with the other students.  In the same way instructors can network other instructors they can also network the students in class to a social group setting.  This grouping allows for interaction between students and the sharing of personalities along with information.  While this is ongoing it is at the same time being safely monitored by an instructor.

Blog # 4.2

         This site EFL Classroom 2.0 holds a lot of valuable information of TESOL instructors.  There are many valuable resources such as: videos, forums, 17,000+ members, games, lessons, voice threads, and other helpful information.  All in all I have to say a very helpful environment.  Most importantly there is a classified section (hopefully in the future some jobs, but not today).
        Working with such a group like this will help to develop and learn new skills for instruction while also giving me good access to new instructional materials.  Great place to use in the future if I have a question that I cannot answer on my own for group efforts work well.

A learner is like new laptop.

Why:
               A new learner and a new laptop have a lot in common with each other.  A new learner comes to a class with preconceived ideas and notions of what can and cannot be learned, while a laptop comes preprogrammed with what it is and is not able to do and accomplish.  However, both can be changed with the correct input.  So, as teachers we need to provide the correct software for the correct learner type.  Furthermore, “Learning is a process that occurs within nebulous environments of shifting core elements – not entirely under the control of the individual” (Siemens) showing that students are a changing environment (system) that needs to be continuously monitored and given the correct input for their changing systems.
          Another aspect of this analogy is that there are different types of laptops and different types of learners.  So, instructors need to provide the correct information to the learner to produce an ideal learning environment for the learner.  Just like Krashen’s theory of “i+1” the instructor needs to give input at the level the student can handle or as a laptop they will not be able to handle the workload and will slow down in their learning progress.  Looking into Siemens views on learning teachers need to have “The ability to recognize and adjust to pattern shifts is a key learning task” because “the network becomes the learning, the network that learners create” is constantly changing.

The top ten list for safe online blogging:


1.Passwords:
Yours and only yours – keep your passwords protected, meaning only you and your trusted family.

2.Personal:
Keep all information about yourself and friends and family protected.

3.Pictures:
Think before you post. 2 main points to that:
      a. If it is meant for a club, it’s not meant for online.
      b. No information in the background (ie house numbers, license plates)

4.Never ending:
What goes online can always be copied and kept online. Hence think before you post.

5.Know your site:
Before you use, know the terms and agreement page for what is and is not allowed.

6.Public Warning:

3 ways one can use a blog for professional development.


Blog’s are new and emerging field of information gathering that provides important tools both in and outside of the class room. Blogs provide a way for anyone to create, control, and connect to other blogs for various reasons. One use of blog’s is for professional development or to better one’s self to become a peek performer in their industry.

I use industry to describe all careers including instruction for in teaching there is the notion of ‘produce or perish.’ This concept we see more and more everyday; from news about government reform of schools to teachers getting dismissed for failing their own report card standards. Hence, one can see how a teacher is the same as any other person in any industry. They need to produce and to constantly keep on producing. To do this they need to improve and keep up to date.

Blogs can help instructors from perishing. Instructors can use blogs as tool to improve. By taking advantage of reading other instructor’s blogs a person can gain new and valuable information, ranging from on how to handle difficult situations to new ways/methods to instruct different lessons. Personally, I have explored numerous blogs about international TESOL. These blogs provided me with ideas that I found useful as a future instructor and also on a personal level. Another useful way blogs could be used by instructors is to provide an area where others can come and discuss ideas and problems with one another. Working together as a community on can become even greater.

Beside these reasons which helps one with their professional development blogs can also be used as an evaluative environment. One could post a copy of their lesson plan or a video of a lesson and allow fellow colleagues to critique and evaluate them. Providing a great source of information on how one is coming along in their professional development. Furthermore, at times it will be a great source for motivation and confidence building.

I hope these ideas can provide some of you with a new view on blogs.
